Amazon is known for its Leadership Principles, a set of directives that guide everything from hiring decisions and new project development to the best way to approach a problem.1 While all 14 principles can help you become a better leader, number 5 deserves extra attention: “Learn and Be Curious.”
The Best Leaders are the Best Learners
As Amazon explains, “leaders are never done learning and always seek to improve themselves. They are curious about new possibilities and act to explore them.”1 The thirst for knowledge not only makes people thought leaders in their industry, but it can also help with making quick decisions. Leaders need to be decisive and having a large foundation of knowledge can aid in making split-second decisions.
Encourage Learning in Others - A sign of a good leader is encouraging others to learn because they understand learning will only make the team as a whole more successful.
There are a wealth of topics that a leader can focus on learning, and they all have value. From staying up to date on industry trends to studying the past, all types of learning can help a person grow as a leader. It’s also important to take the time to assess oneself and learn ways to become a better leader. Through leadership assessments, you can see areas that need improvement and use results to develop a personalized development plan.
